According to Spanish manuscripts the Aztecs consumed the seeds of the plant to build endurance. They called it their “running food” because a messenger could run all day on a handful of seeds. Chia seeds were prized above gold it was used as a food, a medicine, and pressed for the oil as a beauty oil and offered to the gods during religious ceremonies.
